OHS Student Clubs and Groups 2008-2009

 

 

ACADEMIC QUIZ BOWL
 Ms. Christina Carter (X 7284)
Academic Quiz Bowl is an academic competition that is somewhat similar to Jeopardy, but it's a team game, typically with two teams of four people.  We compete against other Academic Quiz Bowl teams in the area. 

ACCOUNTING CLUB & HONORS ACCOUNTING CLUB  

  Ms. Shelli Tribble (X 7154)

The Accounting Club provides a forum for students to explore the opportunities and challenges of the accounting profession, with an emphasis on business ethics from a more detailed perspective.  Activities may include tutoring sessions, guest speakers, shadowing events, and furthering the accounting education, experience, and knowledge.  Member Requirements:  Presently in Accounting 2 (Accounting 1 with sponsor/exec’s approval), 3.0 GPA, have obtained Accounting Title, leadership, dependability and business-oriented characteristics.

 

AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE

   Mrs. Keri Wilson (X 7144)  & Mrs. Liliane Hanna (X 7141)

American Field Service is an international organization designed to foster relationships between international students and students that attend the local schools.  Activities include bowling, holiday parties, an international dinner, week-long  international student home stay and other social events.  This club is open to anyone interested in making new friends.

 

ANIME CLUB

  Mr. Richter (X 7207)

Anime Club meets once every two weeks.  Activities include viewing Anime, preparing Japanese

foods and discussion of the films.

 

ART - NATIONAL HONORS ART SOCIETY

   Ms. Abby Gibbar (X 7285)

National Honors Art Society is a club for Advanced Art students who wish to continue their artistic talents outside of the classroom. Students meet once a month after school to engage in creative activities such as painting, drawing, and sculpting.  In addition, they also engage in special projects such as murals, field trips and activities within the community.

  

CHINESE BUFFET CLUB

   Ms. Megan Admire (X 7135)

Chinese Buffet Club is perfect for anyone who loves Chinese food.  We meet once a month to eat at a local Chinese buffet. Our ultimate goal is to clean the buffet out entirely.  Although we've never done this before, we believe this is our year.  Everyone is welcome to join!

  

COMPUTER ARTS AND SCIENCES CLUB

  Mr. Richard Kling (X7125)  

The Oakville Senior High School Computer Arts and Sciences Club exists to allow all interested students the opportunity to explore and expand their knowledge in any areas of computer science. This may be anything from Graphic Arts and Web Design to Robotics and Programming to building and maintaining a computer system.

  

DECA – An association of Marketing & Management Students

   Ms. Amy Clark (X 7071)

The primary purpose of DECA is to assist students in developing leadership skills in the areas of marketing, management and community service.  Students have opportunities to participate in business-oriented competitions at district, state and national levels. Membership in DECA is restricted to students enrolled in Marketing or Entrepreneurship class.

 

DIABETIC CORNER

   Mrs. Pam Frederich, RN School Nurse (X 7030)

Diabetic Corner is a support group for students and their families.  We meet once a month to listen to guest speakers, to have informative discussions, and to learn and teach each other about our own experiences with diabetes.  Every month is new and different, filled with fun and prizes.  Our meetings are in the evening.  For more information, call Pam Frederich, School Nurse at 467-7030.

 

DRAMA TROUPE

   Ms. Amy Learn (X 7226)

The OHS Drama Troupe is open to any student with an interest in the theatre.  The troupe has one meeting a month, numerous activities and socials and provides opportunities for community service.  Students may participate in OHS musicals, plays, coffee houses, improvisation teams, a competitive one-act, the Missouri State Thespian Conference and club service projects.  Drama Troupe members may work toward membership in the International Thespian Society but are not required to do so.

 

FAMILY, CAREER AND COMMUNITY LEADERS OF AMERICA (FCCLA)

   Mrs. Sam Matoushek (X 7133) & Mrs. Betsy O’Toole (X 7136)

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a national student organization that emphasizes the family as it’s central focus.  It encourages your personal growth, prepares you for a career, fosters family and community involvement and helps you become a leader.  Travel, make new friends and learn leadership skills while having fun and helping others!

 

 

FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES

   Mrs. Jocelyn Bosch & Mr. Aaron Bosch (X 7244)  

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) at OHS is a positive peer group who has a common interest in athletics and Christianity.  This peer group is called a Huddle.  The huddle is made up of student/athletes and students who support athletics.  The Huddle provides a positive influence to help students find their own identity through Jesus Christ, grow spiritually, share experiences, and deal with common problems.  The Huddle meets twice a month at a student’s home.  Fellowship may consist of *discussing issues related to the Christian athlete  *viewing and discussing a video taped message  *  inviting a guest, such as a coach or college athlete, to participate in the discussion  *  enjoying a recreational event.  During a Huddle meeting, student share, discuss and learn from one another.

 

 

FRENCH CLUB

   Mrs. Keri Wilson (X 7144)

French Club is open to all students of French, regardless of level or ability.  It is a fun way to experience other aspects of French culture not covered in class.  Activities include watching French movies and plays, doing service projects, sponsoring school-wide participation in National French Week and having an annual French dinner.  The selling of Mardi Gras beads, temporary tattoos and participation in the Student Council Carnival are the fundraisers of the French Club.

                                                                                   

FRENCH HONOR SOCIETY

   Mrs. Keri Wilson (X 7144)

This is a National Honor Society, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French.  It is widely recognized by colleges and universities.  French Honor Society activities include a spring initiation/banquet.  Members also perform weekly service projects related to French (i.e. tutoring).  Students may join if they currently are enrolled in French II, III, or IV.  Requirements for French II: 3 semesters of A’s in French, overall cumulative grade point average of 3.3.  French III & IV: 3.6 grade point average in French and overall cumulative grade point average of 3.3.

 

FRIENDS CLUB

   Mrs. Kathy Howard (X7209) & Ms. Melissa Dalton (X7179)

Friend’s club provides opportunities for students to build social skills, establish meaningful friendships, promote acceptance among peers, and provide a welcoming environment for all students regardless of ability level.   Students with and without disabilities are welcome to participate in the Friends Club.  

Monthly club meetings will provide structured activities to promote personal and social growth.   Club activities will include arts and crafts, cooking, sporting events, community outings, and community service projects.  

 

FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA (FBLA)

   Mrs. Mary Menderski (X7072)

FBLA is a co-curricular career and technical student organization.  Members are enrolled in business and/or business-related fields including Cooperative Occupational Education.  The mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs.  Activities include inviting guest speakers from the business community, field trips to local businesses to promote career awareness, district, state and national leadership conferences and academic competitions.  FBLA is an integral part of the instructional program and in addition, promotes community service and personal responsibility.

 

GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANCE

   Mr. Ed Taylor (x7216)

The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) strives to assure that each member of our school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.   Students meet to discuss issues around discrimination, including name-calling and bullying, especially around but not limited to sexual orientation and gender identification issues.   The group’s purpose is to educate ourselves and others about prejudice and discrimination and to help work to make the school environment a safe, secure learning environment for all students.   Guest speakers, regional conferences and national resources enrich the program.

 

GERMAN CLUB

   Ms. Caryn Miller (X7141)

German Club participates in many activities during the school year, including celebrating National German Week by decorating with German flag colors, having German food day in classes, a pretzel sale and flag hunt, holding Oktoberfest, learning German dances and dressing in traditional German costume. 

 

GERMAN HONOR SOCIETY

   Ms. Caryn Miller (X 7141)

The Oakville High School is proud to boast the Missouri Alpha Zeta chapter of Delta Epsilon Phi. Delta Epsilon Phi is a national educational honor society sponsored by the American Association for Teachers of German.   The purpose of this organization is to recognize high school scholastic achievement in the study of German and to promote interest in the study of German language and literature.   Those students, who have completed at least 1 ½ years of German study with an average of 3.6 in German and a 3.0 overall, are eligible to join. Students who are members typically go on to take AP German and participate in our partner school exchange with Gymnasium Allee in Hamburg.

 

HIGH SCHOOL TAUGHT EDUCATION PROGRAM  (Hi-Step)

   Mrs. Lori Fick (X 7180)

Hi-Step is a service organization.  Any student can apply to join Hi-Step.  Applicants must have recommendations from three of their current teachers and participate in an interview. Hi-Steppers receive two days of training sponsored by the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association (NCADA).  Hi-Steppers must sign a contract to remain drug, alcohol and tobacco free.  Hi-Steppers travel to local elementary and middle schools, both private and public, and teach life skills during ANP and after school.

 

INTERNATIONAL THESPIAN SOCIETY (ITS)

   Ms. Amy Learn (X 7226)

Thespian Troupe 2192 is the Oakville High School Chapter of the ITS Society.  The goals of the Society are to establish and promote standards of excellence in all phases of dramatic arts and to create an active and intelligent interest in dramatic arts among students.  Oakville High School students who are members of the Drama Club may choose to pursue membership in the ITS.  Students earn and maintain membership by working on after school productions, contributing to Drama Club activities and meeting scholastic criteria.

 

JEFFERSONIAN SOCIETY

   Mr. Rodney Gerdes (X7278) & Mrs. Angelina Moore (X7275)

The purpose of the Jeffersonian Society is two fold; To research and discuss the

process, procedures, requirements, etc. associated with the admission to selective

colleges and universities and to provide quality service opportunities for its members.

 

JOURNALISM II (Newspaper)

   Mr. Jeff Kuchno (X7225)

In this class students learn media ethics, copywriting, layout, design and photography.  They produce the monthly newspaper, The Prowl. Fundraising is done through the selling of ads for the paper. Newspaper class is open to any student who has completed Journalism I (semester course) or received instructor’s approval. Summer journalism camp is optional for those who are interested and is approximately $250.  

 

 

 KEY CLUB

   Ms. Lynn Schmalz (X7238) & Ms. Edie Reynolds (X7242)

Key Club is an international organization at OHS that is sponsored by the South County Kiwanis.  Its purpose is to perform community service work.  All grade-levels, 9-12, are welcome to apply.  Members must earn 150 points by performing community service work.  Also, members are required to attend at least 4 meetings per year to keep up their membership.  Our purpose is to aid the community, our school and the Kiwanis.  Service activities are planned by the members.  Students and parents drive to these activities, most are held on Saturdays and Sundays, some are during the week both in the evenings or after school. There are some club fundraisers and we also help the Kiwanis with their fundraising activities when requested to do so.

 

 

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

  Mrs. Kelly Dickinson (X7257) and Ms. Amanda Zink (X7221)  

The National Honor Society is the front runner of organizations and societies that promote appropriate recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of academics, character, leadership and service.  Thousands of schools are chartered and their chapters are following the national organization’s constitution.  Our students are required to complete service work in the community and school as a part of maintaining the Member in Good Standing designation.   Membership is limited to members of the Junior and Senior classes.

 

PING PONG CLUB

  Mrs. Linda Gebauer (X 7291) and Mrs. Michelle Wood (X 7283)

Ping Pong Club meets weekly October through February after school in the Commons.  The club sponsors singles and doubles tournaments and open play.  All skill levels are welcome to attend!  No cost!  It’s free, it’s fun and it’s fast!  Come and join the fun.

 

 

SCIENCE CLUB

   Mrs. Jean Pfeifer (X7254)

Science Club is a student-driven club where activities express the present club members’ interests.  Any and all suggestions for activities are welcome.  Interested students should listen to the announcements for the time of the first meeting.  Future meeting dates will be decided at that initial meeting.  Science club members may also participate in painting the mural in the Science Hall, helping teachers clean and prepare labs and fundraising for various causes.

 

 

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAM

    Dr. Christine Mehigh (X7065) 

This team is made of students, grades 9-12, who are highly interested in Science.  Students meet twice a month from September through November to do challenging, science-related activities.  Beginning in November, students and their teacher coaches start preparing for the regional competition which takes place at the end of February.  The team may earn advancement to state and national competitions.

 

 

SKILLS USA

   Mr. Matt Schraut (X7124)

The SkillsUSA Championship has been called the showcase of technical education.  It recognizes career and technical students who excel in their occupational areas, as well as in the leadership development activities that are such an integral part of the SkillsUSA program in the classroom.  SkillsUSA has served more than 8.5 million people in our 40-year history.  Through our integrated student programs, competitive events and leadership training, SkillsUSA helps educate tomorrow’s skilled workers to meet the demands of the changing workplace. 

 

 

SPANISH CLUB   

   Mrs. Liliane Hanna (X7147)

The Spanish Club is for any student who has an interest in the Hispanic culture.  The purpose for the club is to increase awareness of the Hispanic culture and to share that interest with others.  Activities include sponsorship in a child in Ecuador, visits to Hispanic events and restaurants.  If you are interested in being a member, all you have to do is attend a meeting on the 1st and 3rd  Tuesday of the month.

 

 

SPEECH AND DEBATE

   Mr. Edward Taylor (X7216)

 

 

Thinking about going into law?   Politics?   Business?

Where else can you improve speaking, thinking, and researching skills while meeting students from over 30 schools in the Greater St. Louis area?   Oakville’s Speech & Debate Team has members in 9 th – 12 th grades.   Some join when they are seniors (and wish they’d gotten involved when they were freshmen!) – others have been involved all four years.   Our program is flexible: you can compete once a year or all year.   Our season begins in October and runs through February (Districts, State and Nationals run into June).   Competition has its rewards!   Students earn membership in the National Forensic League, varsity letters, and honor cords for graduation.   Want more than the team?   There are three classes offered at Oakville : Introduction to Public Speaking; Debate; and Advanced Competitive Forensics (which may be taken for college credit).

 

 

STUDENT COUNCIL (StuCo)

   Mrs. Jennifer Fruhwirth (X7229) & Mrs. Laura Zwilling (X7268)

StuCo is a group of students made up of all grades (9-12) that does charitable works, fundraising for charity, sponsors Winter Dance and the annual blood drive, evokes leadership and citizenship throughout the school, and provides community service.  Other annual events are Rake N’ Run and Nurses for Newborns.  We also send council members to leadership conferences and summer camps each year.   Our Student council offers something for everyone in our high school.

 

 

TEENAGE HEALTH CONSULTANTS

   Mrs. Kelly Kellermann (7136)

 Teenage Health Consultants is a group of juniors and senior students who give

presentations to elementary, middle school and high school students on topics such as

making good decisions, teenage dating, conflict resolution and dating issues.

Presentations are made generally during the school day; however, some are scheduled

after high school hours.

 

  

TIGER CAGE

    Ms. Reynolds (X 7242) & Ms. Schmalz (X 7238)

The Tiger Cage is OHS’s  Pep Club.  We have our own special section at the home football games and give out a spirit item at every home game. We also have Tiger Cage t-shirts that we wear to school on game days. 

 

 

TURNING RESOURCES & ENERGY IN NEW DIRECTIONS  (TREND)

   Mrs. Stephanie Allen (X7263)

 TREND is a nationwide program offering opportunities to develop a healthy, substance-free lifestyle.  TREND encourages teens, college students and adults to form local prevention groups called TREND Chapters that organize drug-free programs and activities.  A chapter may operate independently or join with existing youth programs.  TREND is a positive peer program that links young people, adults, community groups, religious groups and businesses to do something about one of our country’s problems.  The OHS TREND Program was inducted into the National TREND “Hall of Fame” in 1993, honored for its consistent commitment to the philosophy of “celebrating sober”.  In 1996, the OSH TREND Chapter was again honored by being named “The Most Active Chapter in the Nation”.  Year-round activities include National Conference, recognition programs, leadership training, holiday parties, New Year’s Eve Lock-In, Mighty Mud Mania, community service and awareness programs.

 

 

YEARBOOK

   Mr. Jeff Kuchno (X7225)

In this class, students learn marketing, photography, copywriting, and layout & design using state-of-the-art software.  Yearbook is open to students in grades 10, 11 and 12.  Fundraising is done through the selling of ads and yearbook sales.  Summer journalism camp (optional) is available for those who are interested.

 

 

YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT

   Mr. Brian Jones (X7193)

Missouri Youth in Government is a statewide educational program that prepares young

people for responsible leadership in the American democratic process by providing

guidance, training, and experience in the theory and practice of determining public policy.  During the first semester of school, students from around Missouri meet for three days in Jefferson City to participate in the annual Missouri YMCA Youth in Government State Convention.  Programs include: The Executive, Judicial, Legislative, Lobbyist, Political Party, Print Press, and Video News.
